In visual perception, subjective ratings (e.g. of confidence or visibility) can be empirically dissociated from objective performance capacity (d'), which suggests that the two may depend on distinct processes. Do these processes operate independently in parallel (Dual Channel model), or do they form a serial hierarchy (Hierarchical /Metacognitive model)? I present evidence in support of the Hierarchical model from brain stimulation, fMRI, and formal model comparison based on behavioral data. An indirect argument for the Hierarchical model can also be made based on the findings from subliminal priming of cognitive control. Finally, using data on the correlation of individual variability in brain structure with individual variability in metacognitive capacities, I discuss whether these findings in visual perception may generalize to the domain of memory.
